WHAT IS DIXON FISHERIES’ BUSINESS MODEL?
Dixon Fisheries Inc. is a family owned fresh fish and seafood distributor in Central Illinois. Five generations strong, Dixon’s has been in business since 1896. The founders, John and Frank Dixon saw great potential in the fishing industry and natural resources of the Illinois River. By 1910, the Dixon Brothers had become one of the most important producers and wholesalers of fresh fish in the Midwest.
Today, the fourth generation combines solid business traditions and years of industry contacts with modern processing methods, aqua farming, and transportation systems to continue the commitment of excellence in supplying quality seafood products to their customers.
WHAT WERE THEY USING PRIOR TO EDIBLE SOFTWARE?
Dixon Fisheries was using the ERP system, Astra, which was acquired by a larger company called AFS technology.

- Warehouse size: The East Peoria warehouse is 25,000 square feet. Dixon Fisheries also has two distribution centers in East Peoria that services Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa. The Indianapolis division, services all Indiana and part of Ohio.
WHAT MOTIVATED THEM TO LOOK FOR NEW SOFTWARE?
Dixon Fisheries decided to search for new software because Astra, the incumbent system, was acquired by AFS technology. AFS wanted the Astra customers to integrate to the AFS software package, but were extremely limited on their unit of measure for Dixon. Jason Livingston stated, “They wanted to limit their unit of measure to boxes, cases, and eaches or into pounds, gallons, and dozens. We were limited on units of measure and we live in the world of yields. We order 100 pounds of something whole and we turn it into 60 pounds of fillets. You have a 40% variance that you have to build into the cost of goods through a yield.” AFS was not accommodating Dixon Fisheries.
WHY DID THEY CHOOSE EDIBLE SOFTWARE?
Dixon Fisheries knew that AFS was not going to meet their needs. Therefore, they started interviewing and fell in love with Edible Software’s offerings. Jason stated, “We love that Edible Software is family owned and in the same time zone. They had a very good understanding of the industry when it came to perishables, whether it was fish or vegetables and that fit us. Edible Software’s system is out of the box, and the actual model out of the box fit us best out of all the people we interviewed.”
Concerning food safety, Edible software’s traceability through lots feature is of great importance to Dixon Fisheries. Jason stated, “The other system we had, had traceability, but traceability in Edible had a big emphasis in its development, so that was a big plus.”
Dixon Fisheries had a two-year implementation period. Jason stated, “It should be duly noted that Edible Software allowed us to work at our pace. They pushed us to go live, but they never pressured us to go live. Edible Software guided us through the process. We had a key player that got very sick and was off the grid for 6 weeks and Edible Software worked with us through that whole period of working on little things that could be worked on without that person. I really thought that was a big plus in Edible Software’s favor. Edible Software’s ability and willingness to work with a customer is just phenomenal to me.”
WHAT WORKED WHAT DIDN’T?
“As much as Edible Software tried to slow me down, I went live with a very big change to this company through many divisions of our company and in hindsight I was adamant we were going to make changes all at once. I think looking back now, I would have probably waited on going live with certain aspects of Edible Software, like Edible Pick. My warehouse went from a manual picking system to Edible Pick. I wouldn’t have gone live with it initially because we were not ready for that big of a change.”
