Introduction

WHAT IS EDIBLE SOFTWARE?
Edible Software is the best solution for wholesalers, distributors, importers, and manufacturers of perishable goods. It provides instant, up to the minute inventory control, profitability and traceability, as well as full management and accounting information. Edible Software can significantly increase gross margins, due to its accurate and timely reporting capabilities.

WHY DID WE WRITE THIS CASE STUDY?
The purpose of this case study is to show how Edible Software helps seafood distributors and processors increase gross profits.

 SEAFOOD DISTRIBUTION SOFTWARE

For wholesale seafood distribution businesses, the market demand is speed, whether a company trades locally, nationally, or globally. Edible Software’s seafood distribution software increases the efficiency of inventory control and accounting, preserving the ability to supply customers with a fresh and wholesome product.

The key attributes of speed and efficiency that Edible Software provides proves that painstaking attention to detail is necessary. Companies need to have knowledge of precisely where products are and the path they have taken step-by-step throughout the distribution process. This is invaluable information, allowing inventory to be monitored efficiently.

Edible Software’s features are specifically attuned to inventory control in the wholesale food industry. Among the most recent developments in this unique accounting software is a foreign exchange accounting module. This allows companies distributing food internationally to record the profit or loss, not only on the sale of an item, but also the profit or loss made on the difference between currency values. Should the exchange rate change between the time the deal is made and the actual payment is made, our programs will be on the job calculating the difference in a company’s profit margin to the penny.

Employee training in the use of Edible Software is included in every agreement. Furthermore, customer service is provided by an in-house support team, staffed with programmers and support assistants who are knowledgeable about the food distribution business. Edible Software is available 24/7/365 with the guarantee to speak to a real person.

One-size-fits-all never fits anyone quite right. In a business dealing with perishables, even the slightest problem with the details can cause major losses. Seafood distribution presents its own unique sets of challenges, so it makes good business sense to use a food distribution software package that was created with the seafood industry in mind; Edible Software.

Background
WHO WAS INVOLVED?

Jason Livingston, the Sales Manager of Dixon Fisheries has divulged his experience with Edible Software in his day to day tasks.

WHAT IS DIXON FISHERIES’ BUSINESS MODEL?

Dixon Fisheries Inc. is a family owned fresh fish and seafood distributor in Central Illinois. Five generations strong, Dixon’s has been in business since 1896. The founders, John and Frank Dixon saw great potential in the fishing industry and natural resources of the Illinois River. By 1910, the Dixon Brothers had become one of the most important producers and wholesalers of fresh fish in the Midwest.

Today, the fourth generation combines solid business traditions and years of industry contacts with modern processing methods, aqua farming, and transportation systems to continue the commitment of excellence in supplying quality seafood products to their customers.

WHAT WERE THEY USING PRIOR TO EDIBLE SOFTWARE?
Dixon Fisheries was using the ERP system, Astra, which was acquired by a larger company called AFS technology.

MARKET SIZE, EMPLOYEE SIZE, WAREHOUSE SIZE

  • Target Market: grocery stores, restaurants, white table cloth, white linen restaurants and country clubs.
  • Market size: Serves fresh fish and seafood to five states.
  • Employee size: 55-60 employees
  • Warehouse size: The East Peoria warehouse is 25,000 square feet. Dixon Fisheries also has two distribution centers in East Peoria that   services Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa. The Indianapolis division, services all Indiana and part of Ohio.

Purpose
WHAT MOTIVATED THEM TO LOOK FOR NEW SOFTWARE?

Dixon Fisheries decided to search for new software because Astra, the incumbent system, was acquired by AFS technology. AFS wanted the Astra customers to integrate to the AFS software package, but were extremely limited on their unit of measure for Dixon. Jason Livingston stated, “They wanted to limit their unit of measure to boxes, cases, and eaches or into pounds, gallons, and dozens. We were limited on units of measure and we live in the world of yields. We order 100 pounds of something whole and we turn it into 60 pounds of fillets. You have a 40% variance that you have to build into the cost of goods through a yield.” AFS was not accommodating Dixon Fisheries.

WHY DID THEY CHOOSE EDIBLE SOFTWARE?

Dixon Fisheries knew that AFS was not going to meet their needs. Therefore, they started interviewing and fell in love with Edible Software’s offerings. Jason stated, “We love that Edible Software is family owned and in the same time zone. They had a very good understanding of the industry when it came to perishables, whether it was fish or vegetables and that fit us. Edible Software’s system is out of the box, and the actual model out of the box fit us best out of all the people we interviewed.”

FOOD SAFETY?

Concerning food safety, Edible software’s traceability through lots feature is of great importance to Dixon Fisheries. Jason stated, “The other system we had, had traceability, but traceability in Edible had a big emphasis in its development, so that was a big plus.”

Implementation
Dixon Fisheries had a two-year implementation period. Jason stated, “It should be duly noted that Edible Software allowed us to work at our pace. They pushed us to go live, but they never pressured us to go live. Edible Software guided us through the process. We had a key player that got very sick and was off the grid for 6 weeks and Edible Software worked with us through that whole period of working on little things that could be worked on without that person. I really thought that was a big plus in Edible Software’s favor. Edible Software’s ability and willingness to work with a customer is just phenomenal to me.”

WHAT WORKED WHAT DIDN’T?

“As much as Edible Software tried to slow me down, I went live with a very big change to this company through many divisions of our company and in hindsight I was adamant we were going to make changes all at once. I think looking back now, I would have probably waited on going live with certain aspects of Edible Software, like Edible Pick. My warehouse went from a manual picking system to Edible Pick. I wouldn’t have gone live with it initially because we were not ready for that big of a change.”
Outcome-Direct Answers from Jason Livingston

HOW DID EDIBLE SOFTWARE GAIN YOU COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE?

“I would say the precise reporting has given us competitive advantage. The reporting out of Edible Software shows you what’s happening behind the scenes. The reporting we had in the other software we used caused us to do a lot of digging where Edible Software puts it out in front of you. It has allowed me to see some flaws in our procedures whether it be on the accounting or the production side, or the selling side the reporting out of Edible Software has really helped me to fine tune some gray areas in the organization.”

WHAT BENEFIT DID YOU SEE?

I think the long term benefit is the traceability of our products. Traceability will hold everyone companywide, accountable for what they are doing or not doing correctly. It will be a big plus to our organization. Edible Software allows me to keep track of the $1.1 million worth of inventory we receive each month.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT EDIBLE SOFTWARE?

“Traceability and customer service are my favorite attributes of Edible Software. The customer service that I have received from the Edible Software team has been the best experience. Edible Software is our fourth system since we implemented a computer system back in the 1980’s. This is our 4th upgrade and the customer service is great. These people work hard and they work after hours. That means a lot because it keeps my organization running. The customer service beats my expectations.”

Conclusion
Speed and efficiency is imperative to the success of wholesale seafood distribution businesses. Therefore, Edible Software’s complete inventory control, costing, sales, and accounting package is the perfect solution. Attention to detail is essential in order for a company to acquire complete knowledge of the various aspects of its organization such as, (production, accounting, and sales). Edible Software’s accuracy and reliability guarantees increased gross profits if used correctly.
